A mushrooming partnership
Our friends at Sno-Valley Mushrooms are busy year-round growing their delicious varieties of our favorite fruiting fungi–mushrooms! Each spring we let them know how much they’ll get to grow for our CSA members. Shiitakes are the most popular weekly add-on choice of Oxbow staff. They are just the perfect complement to fresh vegetables.
Sno-Valley Mushrooms grows “lignivorous” (wood eating) mushrooms–ones that can be found naturally growing on trees, logs, stumps, or woody debris. They cultivate their fungi on red alder and cottonwood sawdust, supplemented with grains and water from a nearby creek. They use no manure, pesticides, fertilizers, or synthetic chemicals and all of their sawdust comes from mills in Western Washington
Just like us, Sno-Valley Mushrooms is in the business of cultivating food from the ground up. That means it helps them in their planning to know how many mouths they will be feeding this season. For this reason, we have to set a deadline for signing up for the Shiitake Share, and it’s coming up!
Order your Main Season Shiitake Share by Friday, June 24th and you can enjoy fresh mushrooms from now through October.
We’re capturing interesting moments this season and sharing them here to help you learn where your food comes from. Follow Story of a Season on our blog or on Instagram with #storyofaseason.
