Teachers, parents, and mentors, we are interested in your feedback! The fall 2020 season will look a lot differently than we are used to and we are currently reviewing/revising programmatic possibilities. Family Farm Adventures are a key element of the Oxbow Adventure Package, our carefully-crafted summer program for 2020! Each 2-hour Family Farm Adventure connects you and your family to Oxbow in a safe and meaningful way. Check out our FAQs below, and take a peek at what your visit to Oxbow might be like!

Family Farm Adventure FAQs

The Family Farm Adventure is a single, 2-hour visit for your camper and their immediate family or household. While the visit is encouraged, it is optional; you may also just opt to receive the other materials in our Oxbow Adventure Package if you prefer not to visit the farm.

Time slots for Family Farm Adventures are on weekdays: 9AM to 11AM; 12PM to 2PM; and 3PM to 5PM. Follow the steps in the registration process to select a time slot via Sign Up (we’ll send you a link!), and reach out to education@oxbow.org if you have questions or need special accommodations.

Yes! As of July 7th, 2020, masks are required in WA state when visiting public indoor and outdoor spaces/businesses. Our Farmers will also be wearing masks and maintaining a safe 6-ft distance from your family. Masks and gloves will be required when entering any farm fields where food is grown. We will have disposable masks and gloves available for you to use, if needed.

For tips on what to expect and what to bring to Oxbow, check out the short video that we prepared to help you get oriented for your visit!

When preparing your family at home, please consider packing and bringing the following items:

  • Hand sanitizer
  • A face mask for each member of your family (required)
  • Water and snacks
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Clothes/layers for inclement weather (we’ll be outside for the entire 2 hour tour)
  • Boots for mud and hiking

While we want to share Oxbow with everyone, the Family Farm Adventure is intended for your family unit or your immediate household. Feel free to bring parent(s), sibling(s), or other people who live with you, but family members or friends from other households should not be included. Please let us know who you will be bringing at least one day in advance so we can best accommodate your group!

Also, while we love dogs, they are NOT permitted anywhere at Oxbow, including in the parking area. Please leave your furry friends at home!

Your family unit will be the only people embarking on your Family Farm Adventure, led by one Farmer-Educator. Think of it as a private tour of Oxbow! Other small groups (in adherence to WA State guidelines for gatherings) and Oxbow staff may be present on Oxbow grounds, but will maintain strict social distancing protocol.

Produce from the Kids’ Farm is serving many diverse needs this summer—including distribution for hunger relief—so our Kids’ Farm fields have limited access. While your Camp Essentials box will include a selection of seasonal produce and your Field Trip can include some guided harvesting in small amounts (with masks and gloves), we do not have self-guided harvesting or U-pick available during your Family Farm Adventure.

We will provide opportunities for frequent hand washing at designated hand washing stations, and hand sanitizer will be available in throughout your visit. We have a designated outdoor Honeybucket just for visitors, and it is serviced and sanitized frequently.

Please arrive using the public entrance (turn onto 268th street off of hwy 203, you’ll see an “Oxbow” sign with an orange border!). Your farmer will meet you in the parking lot to begin your tour. For a map and more detailed instructions on getting to Oxbow, see our Visitor Info page.

We will have your Summer Camp Essentials boxes ready and waiting for you at Oxbow, equipped with a sampling of seasonal farm snacks and five days’ worth of activities to bring Oxbow summer camp home with you and your camper. If you need to arrange for a different pickup option, just let us know at education@oxbow.org!

Here’s what your Family Farm Adventure field trip might look like…

When you arrive at Oxbow during your designated time slot, you’ll meet one of our Farmer Educators!

You’ll start your visit with a story, and then experience a guided tour of all the special places at Oxbow.

Your farmer will help you and the family harvest & snack on fresh, seasonal Kids’ Farm food, all while maintaining a safe distance!

You’ll hike on one of our nature trails, maybe even getting a little muddy along the way!

We’ll plant a very special sunflower together at Oxbow. We hope you’ll come back to visit it this fall! (Your box will also contain a sunflower to plant and grow together at home.)

At the end of your visit, we’ll invite you to the peaceful fairy home village, where you can play, explore, and work with your family to construct a home for Oxbow’s fairy residents.

Or…you might play games in the vine tunnels, scan the sky for birds on our birding platform, watch a slug race, look for signs of wildlife, spy the tippy top of Mt. Rainier, taste a flower, or meet some friendly worms! Our Family Farm Adventures are tailored to your family’s interests; there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy!
