Why was my box so small? Several people remarked this week that the box was smaller than they expected. This feedback is more common for us in the spring than in later seasons, as the reality is that what’s growing in spring is less voluminous than what grows in summer and fall.
Another reason why this first box may have seemed small is that there were several high value items this week. Sugar snap peas and strawberries are both more valuable AND physically smaller than, say, a head of lettuce. When we are planning the boxes each week, we price out the items at LESS than their market value and make sure that the combined value adds up to AT LEAST $21 (small share) and $31 (family share), which is the weekly per-box breakdown. So if you pay $21 per week for your OxBox, you get $22-$24 worth of veggies at farmers’ market prices.
We care about meeting our guarantee in value, and will provide whatever abundance of food we are able, taking into account what’s growing, it’s market value, and each week’s variety.
